After the railway linked Santiago and Valparaiso, people soon flocked to Vina because of its easy beach access and broad green ;paces, and built grand houses and mansions away from the congested port. Areas north of Vina have much better beaches.
The older area, south of Estero Marga Marga, has a number of mansions and better hospedajes. The area between Von Schroeders and Echevers is a large pedestrian mall with shops, cheap eats and bars. North of Estero Marga Marga is a newer residential grid. Vina is packed in February, especially for the week of the Festival Internacional de la Cancion, held in the Quinta Vergara, featuring singers from the Spanishspeaking world.
