Tupiza

Tupiza

Tranquil and friendly Tupiza is set in the valley of the Rio Tupiza, ringed by the rugged Cordillera de Chichas an amazing landscape of rainbow colored rocks, hills, mountains and canyons. Hiking, biking and horseback riding opportunities abound and the variety of bizarre rock formations, deep gorges and canyons, chasms, and cactus forests are thrilling backdrops.

Reminiscent of the Wild West, Tupiza served as an apt setting for the demise of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid: After robbing an Aramayo payroll at Huaca Huanusca, about 40km north of Tupiza, the pair reputedly met their maker in the mining village of San Vicente. To learn more about Cassidy and the Kid, see the very readable Digging Up Butch & Sundance by Anne Meadows.
