This small, bustling city of about 53,000 is important market town and the provincial capital of Carchi, the northernmost province of the Ecuadorian highlands.The city is popular with Colombian shoppers, but it's not pretty and has little to recommend it. For travelers, it is the gateway to Colombia, 7km away.
