Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego

Tierra del Fuego is a archipelago at the southern extremity of South America. It is seperated from the Antarctic Archipelago by the Drake Passage. The southern and western parts an extension of the Andes Mountains, with peaks exceeding 7,000 ft. About two-thirds of the islands are in Chile, and the remainder are in Argentina. The main island, Tierra del Fuego is divided roughly equally between Chile and Argentina the city of Ushuaia, Argentina there is the southern city in the world. Indigenous people were sole occupants until 1880, when colonization by chilean and Argentine nationals was prompted by the discovery of gold. Chile's only oil field is there. The region's name refers to its many volcanoes.

This 'land of fire' (what 'Tierra del Fuego' translates to) earned its name from distant shoreline campfires the Yahgan (or Yamana) people tended; these were seen by fascinated explorers sailing the surrounding waters and channels. Now almost all the Yahgan are gone and the archipelago is owned mostly by Chile, though the largest cities of Rio Grande and Ushuaia are in Argentina.

Surrounded by the stormy South Atlantic and the Strait of Magellan, this region contains scenic glaciers lush deciduous and evergreen forests, clear lakes and rivers, and a dramatic sea coast. Tierra del Fuego also gives travelers the opportunity to go to the end of RN 3, the southernmost highway in the world. And while Ushuaia claims to be the 'southernmost city in the world' (a major draw for travelers), Puerto Williams a Chilean naval settlement of 20M is just a bit farther south. The area's climate is changeable enough that warm, dry clothing is essential even in summer.
