Cordillera

Cordillera

Northeast of La Paz, the dramatic Cordillera Real rises ever higher before giving way to the Yungas, a beautiful region characterized by steep forested mountainsides that fall away into humid, cloud filled gorges. The Yungas form a natural barrier between the Altiplano and the rain forests and there are several Afroboliviano settlements tucked away here. Going north from La Paz, the road winds up to the 4600m La Cumbre pass, then descends a dramatic 4343m to the lowlands of the Beni region. Tropical fruits, coffee and coca all grow in the Yungas with minimal tending. The climate is moderate, with misty rain possible at any time of year.
