While there's not much to see here (even the locals bemoan it lacks the attractiveness of neighboring towns), Talca (population 172,000) does offer a good local scene and has better long-distance bus connections than other nearby towns. Founded in 1690 but refounded in 1742 after a major earthquake, Talca is capital of the VII Region, 257km south of Santiago.

Sernatur is at 1 Poniente 1281. Conaf , at 3 Sur and 2 Poniente, has details on nearby Altos de Lircay (open until 2 pm). Change your money at Forex, 2 Oriente 1133, and clean your clothes at Lavacentro Suizo, at 1 Norte 1250. The Museo O'Higginiano y de Bellas Artes occupies the house where Bernardo O'Higgins signed Chile's declaration of independence in 1818; free on Wednesday.
