Getting There:

Once a reception camp for newly arrived convicts, St Laurent retains some picturesque colonial buildings and a certain backwater charm. It sits on the east bank of the Riviere Maroni (Marowijne River), which borders Suriname, and lies 250km northwest of Cayenne. You can arrange boat trips up the river, which has many Maroon and Amerindian settlements along its banks.

Information St Laurent's helpful Office du Tourisme , near the jetty at the north end of town, is open 7:30 am to 6 pm Monday to Saturday and 9 am to noon Sunday. Some of the staff speak English, and the office features maps, brochures and displays. Another good place for getting one's bearings is the Rainforest lnformation Center, 9 Rue Victor Hugo, which offers maps and books.

You'll find a bank with a bureau de change at 19 Rue Montravel; it's open 7:30 to noon daily and 3 to 4 pm daily except Wednesday and Saturday. There's an ATM at the post office.
