Sao Luis

Sao Luis, capital of Maranhao, is a city of 835,000 with unpretentious colonial charm and a rich folkloric tradition - a highlight for travelers in the northeast. Its restored colonial center is one of the architectural highlights of Brazil. There are passable beaches only 10 minutes by bus from the center (with better ones farther afield).

Sao Luis, was founded by the French in 1612 but taken by Portugal in 1615. It developed slowly as a port for exports of sugar and later, cotton. In recent decades its economy has been stimulated by megaprojects such as a new port to export the minerals of the Serra dos Carajas in neighboring Para state, and a missile station near Alcantara.
