Santa Marta

Santa Marta

Founded in 1525, Santa Marta is the oldest surviving town in Colombia, though its colonial character has largely disappeared. The climate is hot, but the sea breeze, especially in the evening, cools the city and makes it pleasant to wander about, or to sit over a beer in any of the numerous open air waterfront cafes.

Santa Marta has become a popular tourist center mostly because of its su'_ roundings rather than for the city itself. El Rodadero, just to the south (today within the city limits), is a fashionable beach resort. North of Santa Marta is the popular fishing village of Taganga, and further northeast, the beautiful Parque Nacional Tavrona. Santa Marta is also a jumping off point for Ciudad Perdida.
