Over the past four decades, Santa Cruz mushroomed from a backwater cow town of 30,000 to its present position as Bolivia's second largest city, with its population well over a million. The concurrent explosion of the cocaine trade may not be coincidental.
Though growth continues at a phenomenal rate, this cosmopolitan city on the edge of a retreating wilderness retains traces of its dusty past: It has direct flights to Miami and Europe, but sloths still laze in trees in the main plaza. Visitors enjoy the tropical ambience and frontier feel, and it's a good base for exploring some still pristine rain forests and 18th century Jesuit missions.
