On the shores of Seno Ultima Esperanza (Last Hope Sound), 250km northwest of Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales (population 18,000) is the southern terminus of the ferry trip through the Chilean fjords and is the base for trips into Parque Nacional Torres del Paine. In town, the Museo Historico Municipal, at Bulnes 285, has natural history items (mostly stuffed animals), archaeological artifacts, and historical photographs of Puerto Natales' development.
