Patagonia

Patagonia

Patagonia Semiarid scrub plateau, southern Argentina. It is the largest desert region in the Americas, with an area of about 260,000 sq mi (673,000 sq kin). Its approximate boundaries are the COLORADO RIVER in the north, the Atlantic Ocean in the east, the Coig River in the south, and the ANDES MOUNTAINS in the west. A region of vast and virtually treeless plains, it has a variety of wildlife, including llamas, pumas, and eagles. Natural resources include petroleum, iron ore, copper, uranium, and manganese.

Few places in the world inspire the traveler's imagination like Patagonia, even with the mere mention of a name. Those adventurous souls that manage to journey down here will find a mostly windy, barren, enormous expanse of flat bleakness that, at its Andean edge, contains some of the most fantastic mountain scenery in the world, not to mention awe inspiring glaciers and resplendent rivers and lakes.

The sky is wide, the clouds are airbrushed and the late sunsets can be spectacular. Perhaps because of these characteristics, Patagonia attracted tough outlaws Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, has been the backdrop for some notable books by authors such as Darwin and Bruce Chatwin, and has drawn property seekers like Ted Turner and Sylvester Stallone. Previously relying on sprawling sheep estancias for its economy, it now depends more heavily on large oilfields in Chubut and Neuquen provinces and on the tourism from its Andean national parks.
