This is one of the most popular parks among those looking for beaches and snorkeling opportunities. Set at the eastern edge of Falcon state, the park comprises a strip of the coast and the offshore area dotted with islands, islets and cays. Many islands are skirted with white sand beaches and surrounded by coral reefs, though some of the coral has died (probably the result of a chemical leak from an oil refinery in 1996).
The most popular of the islands is Cayo Sombrero, which has fine coral reefs and some of the best beaches. Other places good for snorkeling include Cavo Borracho. Cayo Peraza, Playa Mero and Playuela.
