Ovalle

Ovalle

Ovalle (population 53,000), half an hour east of the Panamericana, is a pleasant stop if planning trips to Parque Nacional Fray Jorge or Valle del Encanto. There's a tourist kiosk on the Alameda at the corner of Benavente and Ariztia Oriente. Limtur, at MacKenna 307, in front of Plaza del Armas, also has information and can arrange tours to nearby attractions.

The Museo del Limari, in the restored railway station (at Covarrubias and Antofagasta), stresses the trans Andean links between the Diaguita peoples of coastal Chile and northwestern Argentina. It's open Tuesday to Friday 9 am to 1 pm and 3 to 7 pm, and weekends 10 am to 1 pm. The Feria Modelo, a lively fruit and vegetable market with several restaurants, occupies the former railway workshops. It's open Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Look for the large yellow building a block from the bus station.
