Getting There:

Merida, is arguably Venezuela's most popular destination among foreign backpackers. It has an unhurried and friendly atmosphere, plenty of tourist facilities, the famous teleferico (cable car) and beautiful mountains all around, including the country's rooftop, Pico Bolivar, just l2km away. It's the country's major center for outdoor activities.

Home to the large Universidad de los Andes (Venezuela's second oldest university), Merida, has a sizable academic community that gives it a cultured and bohemian air. The city enjoys a pleasant, mild climate, with an average temperature of 19'C (66'F). Furthermore, it's inexpensive and reasonably safe by Venezuelan standards. Merida, was founded in 1558, but its transition from a town into a city really took place only over the last few decades. It sits on a flat meseta, a terrace stretching for a dozen kilometers between parallel rivers, its edges dropping abruptly to the riverbanks. Having filled the meseta as densely as possible, Merida is now expanding beyond it and is approaching 250,000 inhabitants.
