Maracay

Maracay

The capital of Aragua state, Maracay is a thriving city of about 500,000 people. It was founded in 1701, but its growth only really came with the rule of Juan Vicente Gomez (1908 35), an enduring and ruthless caudi llo. He made Maracay his home and com missioned a number of projects, including the government house, a bullring, an avia tion school, an opera house, a zoo and his own mausoleum.

Maracay may not make the 'not to bemissed' list, but it has some attractions and a number of parks, including Venezuela's largest Plaza Bolivar. The city is a gateway to Parque Nacional Henri Pittier
