Mar Del Plata

Located 400 km south of Buenos Aires, Mar Del Plata is the most popular beach destination in Argentina. It is one of the major fishing port and commercial hub of Argentina. In 1856 Portuguese explorer Jose Coelho Mierelles founded the fishing village La Peregrina. Mar del Plata was established in 1874 and promoted as a seaside resort; it became a city in 1907. It is famous for its luxurious casino. Major attractions are wide and attractive beach, older colonial buildings, museums (glesia Stella Maris, The Museum of the port of Mar del Plata, The Museum of the Sea, Museo del Mar, Museo Juan Carlos Castagnino, Museo Guillermo Vilas and Villa Victoria), casinos, sea lion colony and nightlife. The European navigator Sir Francis Drake visited Mar del Plata in 1577. Army and Navy groups based in the town participated in the Falklands War of 1982 with Britain.
