Getting There:

Aged Tehuelche people came to this place whose name comes from the Tehuelche words for 'Place of the Elders') to spend their last days, Situated on the shores of Lago Buenos Aires, this little green village now has rows of poplar trees sheltering irrigated chacras (farms) of cherries, strawberries, apples, apricots, pears and peaches. Los Antiguos' Fiesta de Cereza, or cherry festival, lasts three days in January, and the nearby countryside has good fishing and hiking.

Los Antiguos is also becoming a popular gateway into Chile, especially as an alternative way of getting up (or down) the spine of the Andes (rather than flying or taking the scenic but overpriced Navimag freighter trip on the Chilean side for details on the Navimag trip, see the Getting Around section in the Chile chapter). Both the tourist office and bank are on Av 11 de Julio, the main street, which runs the length of town.
