An attractive provincial city surrounded by beautiful countryside, Loja makes a convenent stopover on the route to Peru via Macara One of the country's best universities is here, and the streets are vibrant, with plenty of cozy little hideaways. For views of the town, take a short walk east across Rio Zamora and up a hill to the statue of the Mirgen de Loja. Delightful attractions near

Loja include the village of Vilcabamba and Parque Nacional Podocarpus. The main market day is Sunday. The annual fiesta of the Virgen del Cisne is on September 8; it's celebrated with huge parades and a produce fair.
