La Serena

La Serena Peaceful most of the year, pretty La Serena (population 120,000) is a trendy beach resort come summer. It's also capital of the IV Region and the jump off point to Valle Elqui (as evidenced by the many tarot card readers in town). Founded in 1544, the city sports a good deal of interesting architecture some of it original colonial (this is Chile's second oldest city), but most 'neocolonia' the product of Serena born President Gabriel Gonzalez Videla's 'Plan Serena' of the late 1940s. There's also an impressive arr ay of 29 churches. Nearby Coquimbo is quite a bit more rough and tumble, but is more alive at night. The Feria Internacional del Libro is held in late January/early February.
