Ilha Grande

If you really want to get away from it all, Ilha Grande may well be the place to go. This island, off the coast about 150krn west of Rio de Janeiro, is almost all tropical beach and Atlantic rain forest, with only three settlements.

You can take a boat trip from Vila do Abra5o, the main settlement, or follow trails through the steamy forest to beaches around the island. It's a 21/2 hour hike from Abra5o to Praia Lopes Mendes, which some claim to be the most beautiful beach in Brazil. Praia de Parnaioca also ranks up there.

Vila do Abraio

Busy on weekends and tranquil during the week, Abraio has a gorgeous, palm studded beachfront of pale, faded homes. Not far away are the ruins of an old prison that will still give you the creeps.
