Foz do Iguaqu
People visit the city of Foz do Iguaqu to see the stupendous Cataratas do Iguacu, 20km southeast, where the Rio Iguaqu plunges and crashes 80m in 275 different falls. The city has settled down since the frenzied period when the nearby Itaipu dam was under construction, but the riverfront area should still be avoided at night.
Nearby Ciudad del Este, Paraguay, is shabby but lively, while Puerto Iguazu, Argentina, is much more mellow. Most budget travelers stay in Foz because it has more and cheaper accommodations.
The Falls
To see the falls properly, which takes at least two full days, you must visit both sides Brazil gives the grand overview and Argentina gives you a closer look. The best time to come is August to November. From May to July you may not be able to approach the swollen waters on the catwalks. On the Brazilian side, walk to the observation tower by the Floriano falls, then over to Santa Maria falls. The walkway gives you a fantastic view of the Garganta do Diablo (Devil's Throat) and an invigorating cold shower.
