Getting There:

Fortaleza Port city (pop., 2002 est.: 2,219,800), northeastern Brazil. It lies at the mouth of the Pajeu River. Originating as a small village adjoining a Portuguese fort, it took the name of Villa do Forte da Assumpcao in 1654. In 1810 it became the capital of Ceara captaincy, and in 1823 it was given city status. It became the capital of a province under the name of Fortaleza Nova de Braganca. It is a textile-manufacturing centre; its port handles exports.

Ceara's capital Fortaleza (population 2.1 million) is a fishing port and commercial center with a small historic section and an active beach nightlife scene. Fortal, Fortaleza's lively 'out of season' Carnaval, happens in the last week of July.

The city center forms a grid above the old historical section and includes the Mercado Central (Central Market), the cathedral, major shopping streets and government buildings. Beaches such as Praia de Iracema and Praia do Meireles stretch east from the center towards the port and the Farol Velha (Old Lighthouse). Praia do Futuro extends 5km southeast from the lighthouse.
