To see it, however, you'll probably have to base yourself in nearby El Calafate. But don't despair, as it's not the place it once was; the fair town is working on improving its tourist services and the loose dog packs can be really entertaining. Make reservations in the JanuaryFebruary peak season, when Argentines on vacation flood in faster than those icechunks can fall off the glacier.
In town, birders can flock to beautifully situated Laguna Nimes, a bird wetlands sanctuary only 15 minutes walk from center. Ibis, black necked swans, flamingos and several species of geese and ducks can be seen.
