One of Brazil's prettiest and least visited colonial gems, Diamantina boomed when' diamonds were discovered there in the 1720s. Because of its isolation, it's a wellpreserved colonial town. The center has changed little in 200 years.

Diamantina is about 300km north of Belo Horizonte. The stark landscape of northern Minas, with its rocky outcrops and barren highlands, poses a sharp contrast to the lush southern hills.
