Copiapo

Alcantara

Copiapo (population 100,000) is a pleasant town and point of departure for treks to Argentine peaks and Laguna Verde. The town lagged behind other cities until an 18thcentury gold boom, and then really took off after the discovery of silver at nearby Chanarcillo in 1832.

This provided Copiapo with several firsts: South America's first railroad (completed in 1852 to the port of Caldera), Chile's first telegraph and telephone lines, and the first gas works. Copiapo is 800km north of Santiago and 565km south of Antofagasta.
