Grubby, chaotic Ciudad del Este has an unfortunate reputation as one of South America's most corrupt cities, frequented by smugglers and money launderers. An important border crossing, it is also Latin America's biggest shopping center.

During the day the streets are a heaving, frantic mass of Brazilian and Argentine shoppers in search of cheap electronic goods, cigarettes and liquor, but by 5 pm all business has cleared away and the city takes on a deserted and sinister feel. New Brazilian customs laws and economic depression have hit Ciudad del Este hard, and business though still booming by most standards is not what it used to be.
