Cartagena

Cartagena

Cartagena city , formally known as Cartagena of the Indies is in Colombia. Located on the northwestern coast, it has a good harbour and is Colombia's principal port for oil exports. Cartagena was founded in 1533 by Pedro de Heredia, in the area where the Caribbean CalamarŪ people lived, their name meaning 'crab'. This native population was part of a native tribe called the MocanŠes; Spanish accounts describe them as fierce and warlike, and point out that even women fought on a par with men. It was strongly fortified and often attacked, notably by British forces under FRANCIS DRAKE (1585) and Edward Vernon (1741). It remained under Spanish control until 1815, when it was taken by revolutionary leader SIMON BOLIVAR. Though soon lost, it was retaken by independence forces in 1821. It declined in the 19th century but regained prominence in the 20th century as an oil-processing Centre.

Cartagena de Indias is legendary for both its history and its beauty. It is Colombia's most amazing colonial city, and shouldn't be missed. Don't be in a hurry either, as the city's charm will keep you here for at least several days.

It was the place where treasure plundered from the indigenous people was stored until the galleons could ship it back to Spain. As such, it became a tempting target for pirates and, in the 16th century alone, it suffered five dreadful sieges, the best known of which was that led by Sir Francis Drake in 1586 In response to pirate attacks the Spaniards decided to make Cartagena an impregnable port, and constructed elaborate walls encircling the town and a chain of forts. These fortifications helped save Cartagena from.
