Calama

Calama

It has never rained in Calama. Gateway to Chuquicamata and backpacker mecca San Pedro de Atacama, Calama (population 110,000), 220km from Antofagasta and 2700m above sea level, is a good stopover with many amenities. Well heeled businessmen mix with a growing population of outof work youth in this bustling town, which is undergoing substantial changes: The population of nearby Chuquicamata is relocating to Calama.

Indicative of its macho mining culture, streets are lined with schops con piernas (same ideas as the cafes con piernas, but with beer). Parque El Loa, at the south end of Avenida O'Higgins, is a rather drab park with a scale model of Chiu Chiu a typical Andean village northeast of Calama and a museum.
