Belem

Belem

Belem (population 1.27 million), 120km upstream from one of the Amazon's many mouths, is the economic center of the north and the state capital of Pera. It's a lively city with the biggest port on the Amazon and some fascinating historic architecture. Founded in 1616, it served as the base for the Portuguese conquest of Amazonia. Its one of the rainiest cities in the world, but each cloudburst brings relief from the oppressive heat.
