Founded in 1537, Asuncion initially attracted Spaniards because of Guarani food and hospitality. but the city soon faded into obscurity when the and Chaco, with its hostile indigenous population, proved an unsuitable route to Peru.Even today, Asuncion still has an air of remoteness. Seven hundred miles from the sea, with the Rio Paraguay providing an exotic backdrop, this may not be one of the world's great metropolises, but it is certainly the thriving social, political and economic heart of Paraguay. Despite a population of 1.2 million and a recent construction boom, downtown retains an intiinate 19th century feel, with low, balconied buildings and orange trees lining narrow streets.
