In colonial times, Arica (population 191,000) was an export point for silver from Potosi (in present day Bolivia). Where Chile and Peru battled in the War of the Pacific, tourists now lounge on the beach and Aymara Indians sell handicrafts.
Industrialization failed in the
1960s, but international trade and a duty free zone (zona franca) brought a dramatic population increase. At the foot of El Morro de Arica, a dramatic headland, the downtown is a slightly irregular grid. The Chile Peru border is 20km north.
